Have you ever walked along a river from its spring to its mouth? If not, the time is now.
You will get to know the upland river Slatina which is not only the source of water but also concerns. Actually it’s a little different – we humans are the ones with the concerns – but in this story, they are closely linked to the river.
Slatina originates under the nature reserve Vrch Slatina in the village of Hriňová. It provides drinking water to several small towns and villages in the area. There are 2 bigger dams and the plan was to build another one. This river used to flow into Hron under the Zvolen castle but both streams of the river are bound to dikes now and they re-unite under the Pustý castle.
EXPERIENCE THE STORY OF A RIVER: 55 KM WITH LOCAL ENVIRONMENTALIST JANKA:
- On the first day, we start walking from the upper part of the river where it is small, clear and embraced by the deep forest finishing at the place where it fills up a drinking water reservoir.
- On the second day, we will get to know a completely different character of the river. The river flowing close to people settlements and taking away what society dumps into it. The river is not that clean anymore but it is still beautiful. It wiggles its way in a natural river-basin, disrupted only every now and then by a road or a railway.
- On the third day, we will walk along the last part from Slatinka village until the river mouth at the Hron river. This part is under the surveillance of cobalt blue kingfishers, otters, hundred-year-old alders but is also hunted by a whale… You will learn the whole story on the spot. 🙂
